In October 2007, Beverly A. Scott, Ph.D. became general manager and chief executive officer of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), the ninth largest transit system in the United States. Recognized throughout the industry as a progressive leader of exceptional skill and foresight, Scott brings strong vision and leadership to MARTA's ongoing implementation of system improvements and its efforts to develop a comprehensive regional transportation plan. Scott's career in the transportation industry spans more than 30 years and includes leadership positions with some of the nation's largest and most notable transit organizations. Scott currently serves as chairperson of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) a national organization with 1500 organizational members. Scott holds a doctorate in Political Science with a specialization in Public Administration from Howard University and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Fisk University (Magna cum Laude; Phi Beta Kappa).

RE: Time For Feds To Fund Mass Transit Operating Expenses?

The current economic and financial situation in the U.S. has had far-reaching effects on public transit agencies. Yet, while transit ridership is increasing in the face of high gas prices and falling disposable income, transit agencies are being forced to implement service cuts, fare increases and layoffs as a result of declining state and local revenues. As Chair of APTA and General Manager/CEO of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, I believe that in order to promote a more multi-model transportation system, it is critical we invest in our public transportation systems by permitting the use of federal transit funds for operating…  Read more
