Paul M. Weyrich is chairman and CEO of the Free Congress Research and Education Foundation. From 1989 to 1996, he served as president of the Krieble Institute, which was responsible for training democracy movements in the states comprising the former Soviet Union. Weyrich was a co-founder of the Heritage Foundation and is the current National Chairman of Coalitions for America. A former reporter and radio news director, he hosts a weekly Internet talk show and is a regular guest on daily radio and television shows. Weyrich has published policy reports and journals on a variety of conservative and transit issues. Since 1963, he has been married to the former Joyce Smigun, is the father of five children, and serves as a deacon in his church.

RE: Has Mass Transit Finally Arrived?

APTA, the American Public Transportation Association, has submitted a package of over $ 8 billion in short term projects. These are projects which are ready to go now. I have my doubts about the effectiveness of stimulus bills, but since it is clear President elect Obama is intent on advocating one,I certainly hope the Congress will include these transit projects in whatever bill they come upm with.. Beyond that there are many, many cities which are interested in light rail and streetcars. The Bush Administration has absolutely refused to fund any of these. I hope, if all of the money…  Read more
